Therapeutic approach
Building a life worth living through skills and balance.
DBT is a structured, evidence-based therapy that blends acceptance and change. It gives you practical, powerful skills to manage intense emotions, navigate relationships, and build a life that feels worth living.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy was developed by Dr Marsha Linehan, originally for people with borderline personality disorder, but is now widely used for anyone who experiences intense emotions or struggles with impulsive behaviours. The 'dialectic' at its heart is the balance between acceptance and change.
DBT is built around four skill modules: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. These skills are practical and teachable, and your therapist will work with you to apply them to the specific challenges in your life.
DBT is effective for emotional dysregulation, self-harm, suicidal ideation, eating disorders, substance use, BPD, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties. It is a particularly good fit for people who feel emotions very intensely.
DBT sessions are skills-focused and practical. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to identify patterns, build new skills, and apply them in real life. Sessions are validating — you will always feel heard and understood, not judged.
